Field Trip to the Field Museum
My family lives in northern Indiana and my favorite thing to do when I go visit is spend a day in Chicago. During my last visit two weeks ago, I spent a full day at the Field Museum. WOW! It was the first time I’ve been to the museum since making the switch from biologist to biology teacher. I definitely gained a new appreciation for its value as an educational hotspot. Unfortunately, it’s too far to take my students there on a field trip. I plan on writing more about my experience at the museum in the future, but for now tell me about your greatest summer learning experience.
Please remember to leave out personal, identifying information!

The field museum sounds really fun! it sounds a lot like the georgia Fernbank museum. they have a lot of biology as well as physics kind of stuff. I’ll try to remember that museum if my family ever takes a trip to Chicago!

I’ve heard a little about that museum. I think the biggest fossilized t-rex is there. It’s name is Sue. She’s the most well preserved too!
August 14th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
That’s really cool. When I went to Washington D.C. one year, we went to a museum like that. I was only about 5 or 6 years old then, so I don’t remember the name of it, but it was pretty cool.
August 14th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
The museum sounds like fun i’ve only been to art museums so i don’t really know much about the regular ones, but if I’m ever in Chicago I’ll have to go by! This summer I spent most of my time here in Georgia, but I did go to Florida for a week. It was alot of fun my family all went to different theme parks and shopping.

The Field Museum sounds awesome!!! I absolutely love going to museums. I always want to read every caption by the exhibits (which drives my family crazy). I wish I could go!
August 14th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
MY GREATEST EXPERIENCE WAS TO COME TO THE U.S.A. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TO BE HERE AND ALSO I JUST CAME HERE TWO OR THREE WEEKS AGO
August 14th, 2007 at 5:36 pm
The field museum sounds really cool! I have never been to a museum, i will have to go sometime!
August 14th, 2007 at 5:36 pm
I’ve been to Chicago before but I’ve actually never been to the museum there. But I still love the city.
We actually went to Alaska on a trip this summer since you asked about our summer up there. It was actually really fun, I’ve been before, but this time we got to do this helicopter thing to a glacier and dog sled and stuff so that was fun.
August 14th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Sounds like fun. I went to the museum of natural history in D.C. over springbreak last year and was a lot like that.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
The museum sounds really cooland helpfull to people who like science. I hope some day I get a chance to go to Chicago to see the museum. This summer i went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming I was able to see a lot of wild life such as bears, deer, elk, coyotes, buffalo, and moose. It was really cool experience sence usually there are not that many animals visible but sence it was so hot a lot more of them come to where people can see them. For example this is my probobly twenty fifth time up there sence I moved away twelve years ago and I have never seen a bear and not only did I see one this time but four of them really close up.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:16 pm
That sounds like a really cool museum to visit! I really love museums, they let you have fun and learn at the same time! One of my favorite museums is the one in Dahlonega. :]
August 14th, 2007 at 6:27 pm
The museum sounds fun. Maybe you could show us some pictures and tell us more about it in class if you ever have time.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
That museum sounds awesome! It sounds like an enjoyable experience to help children about biology. Unfortunately for me, my mom had to work this summer, so we really didn’t get to go on any fun trips. So to fill my time, I helped out with my church’s Vacation Bible School, as well as babysitting and pet sitting. It may not have been super exciting, but it did teach me the importance of the time, care, and patience it takes to properly care for a life. It was a real learning experience!
August 14th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
The field museum sounds like a great place to learn things about biology, that would help someone a lot with knowledge of the subject. Next time I am in Chicago I will go there, hopefully.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
The Field Museum sound like a neat place. I heard that the world’s best preserved preserved T-rex is there. Is that true? If so, i would like to find out more about it. Nice blog!
August 14th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
One experience I had this summer was when I applied for a job and did not get the job. This taught me to not get dissapointed and to have many options so if one thing does not work out you have fall backs.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
The museum looks like a cool place to visit and an awesome place to look around! Like some other people, I really did not go on any vacations this summer, but my greatest learning experience would have to be watching the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet and learning about exotic animals and how they contribute to their environments.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Well, Thats really cool about what you did in Chicago. Now this summer I had got to spend three weeks with my old school to tour across England.
August 14th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
I’ve always wanted to go to a museum. I don’t think I’ve ever been to one… maybe a long time ago. My best summer learning experience was when my family went on a mission trip to Jamaica in July. It was cool to be in a place like that and see how people in other countries live. We met a lot of nice people and great kids. It taught me how blessed we are in America and how you don’t need a lot to be happy.
August 14th, 2007 at 7:03 pm
That looked like a lot of fun! It reminds me of a meusum that my family took me to while we still lived in arkansas. My greatest summer learning expierience was watching shark week on the discovery channel!
August 14th, 2007 at 7:17 pm
This museum sounds like it would be pretty cool and a fun place to visit! This summer I went to Florida and back to my home in Iowa. Unfortunately, I did not get to visit any sort of museum. But, back in Iowa there is a museum sort of like this one that I used to visit all the time. We used to go there for field trips and such. It was always super fun!
August 14th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
I have actually been to Chicago before. It was a fantastic experience. We got to see SUE the giant T-rex!
I would have to say that my best summer experience was going deep-sea fishing with my dad. we caught enough varieties to make a sea food platter! I even caught an oyster on a peice of shrimp. It was AWESOME!
August 14th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
That sounds so fun! I havent been to that many museums ,but the ones I have been to were really neat. You should tell us more about it in class one day!
August 14th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Thst museum sounds cool. I’ve never been to it but I would like to go. My favorite summer experience was going to New York, where I went to alot of other cool museums
August 14th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
That museum sounds really cool! The only museum I’ve ever been to was in Ft. Sumter. I bet the feild museum is alot more fun! This summer I went on a mission trip to Savannah with my church. It was so much fun! The people were so happy that we did some thing as little as eating ice cream with them or painting their house. It really made me think. I will definately go again next year!
August 14th, 2007 at 8:29 pm
That is so cool because I have also been to the field museum. I lived in Chicago for five years and Indiana for two. I have been their on a field trip and with my family as a little kid. I have always loved the t-rex.
August 14th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
This museum is awsome, I have been there before. I went a few years ago when i had a few days to spare, and it was well worth it. I would absolutely love to go back there!
August 14th, 2007 at 8:41 pm
I love seeing animals. This summer I went to the aquarium with my family. Although they were not in their proper enviroments I still loved to see how the whales interancted with eachother. They were about the coolest creatures i’ve seen
August 14th, 2007 at 8:48 pm
That museum looks pretty cool! I read some more about their t-rex. It said that that they found it in South Dakota,in the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation.
August 14th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
I HAVE BEEN TO THE FIELD MUSEUM BEFORE. IT WAS REALLY COOL. THEY HAD THE HUMAN BODY EXIBIT.
August 14th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
That museum sounds really cool. It reminds me a lot of the natural history museum.
This summer my greatest learning experience was going on a mission trip to Bluefield, West Virginia with my youth group. We got to learn a lot about the area and help out the community too.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
This summer I went to Australia and New Zealnd through a program called People to People. I learned a lot about the culture there and I had a great time. I went to a museum there too. It was ok, but I am not really a museumkind of person. I think they are kind of boaring.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
WOW! That museum sounds awesome. Though I really wish it was closer to Georgia. My greatest summer learning experience would have to be the time I visited Tallulah Gorge. While there, I learned about many animals found in that region!
August 14th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Museums are pretty neat i have gone to Washington D.C. and been to plenty. It was a great experience but this museum sounds pretty neat to go to. My greatest learning experience this summer was when I went to Arizona and went into a cave with all different formations which was pretty neat.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:23 pm
this sounds like a cool place to visit. I have always enjoyed learning about animals. I saw that there were a few exibits about some ancient animals. I went aquirium in the winter and i enjoyed all of the animals. This summer i did not really do learning i mostley sat around, and I alos went to orlando.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
The Field Musuem sounds like an awesome place to visit.
I’ve never been to a museum like that but if I get the chance to I definately will.
It sounds like a great place to have fun and learn at the same time.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:30 pm
That museum looks really cool just based on that pic of the dinosaur bones up there. Probably my best summer learning experience was actually this summer when i went hiking in California. I had alot of fun and I got to see alot of nature and animals that I don’t get to see around here.
August 14th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
I am a museum fan and a dinsaur person too. I really enjoy places like that because it makes me feel very advanced. I had a very painful learning expirience this summer, it was actually pretty exciting though. I had my appendix taken out at 2:30 in the morning and stayed in the hospital for two days. It helped me to learn that the doctors office is not all that bad a place. But i would have liked to have found that out in someother way.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
This summer I went to charleston. My family heard lots of stories on the ghost tour, and on the carriage ride, I learned that oleander was poisonous. We also went to fort sumnter and the battery and I learned alot of the history there.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
This sounds like a really cool museum. I don’t go to many museums but this sounds like a cool one to visit. Since this summer i was too busy moving to do much, hopefully I’ll be able to see it sometime next summer or so. If i find any more information on this, I’ll post it on here.
August 14th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
The museum sounds very interesting and educational. This summer my family and I went to the Grand Canyon. It was really cool and not just a big hole in the ground.
August 14th, 2007 at 11:10 pm
My greatest learning experience this year was in Mexico. I got to snorkel and sea many marine animals such as eels, stingrays, sea turtles and manitees. It helped me a lot to learn about different aquatic species
August 15th, 2007 at 7:38 am
That museum looks very interesting! Just from seeing the picture it looks like it has a lot of interesting exhibits to see. I didn’t really have any learning experiences this summer, at least not any big ones that I can think of, but I did strengthen my relationships with my friends at basketball camp and at football workouts.
August 15th, 2007 at 8:03 am
Sounds like you had a really fun time! My parents take me to alot of museums and you really learn alot. This summer i went to the beach with my family.
August 15th, 2007 at 8:34 am

August 15th, 2007 at 10:31 am
The museun sounds awesome! If I ever visit Chicago, I will be opt to visit there! This summer I went on amazing trips but the one that was most fun is when I went to Charleston. I got to go in the ocean and swim with some dolphins and then if you walked down the beach you could see stranded horse shoe crabs. It was awesome!
August 15th, 2007 at 10:31 am
That sounds like a fun trip. I’m sure you got to meet other cool people just as interested in biology as you are. Did you go with anybody? If so, I bet you found out alot about about them, even if it’s like your mom, when you go places like that on a long trip you get to talk for a while, and get a little more personal. Anyways, Cha town is too far, but what about the aquarium in GA? It’s got biology written on the front door. I’m sure even if you’ve been, it’d be a great way to get hands on learning! Good idea, huh?
August 15th, 2007 at 10:34 am
The Field Museum sounds like lots of fun. The T-rex is huge! It’s amazing that they could preserve something so old. I bet it takes a lot of work.
August 15th, 2007 at 10:36 am
Wow That so cool it sounds like you had a lot of fun! Well this summer I went to Jamestown and yorktown and then to Washinton D.C. it was so much fun. August 15th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
This musuem looks like tons of fun. I can see how an entire day is spent there. I will try to remember this musuem.

I’ve never been to Chicago, most of my friends have and say it’s a pretty cool place. I really wish I was able to check out the Body Exibit they had going on, that really interests me.
August 15th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
I remember in 5th grade I went to Fernbank muesuem and we went for the whole day and I enjoyed it there was a big dionosaur just like that one. At Fernbank they also have many exhibits on display for example the butterfly exhibit and the what would seem like a movie theater but not and you can watch wild life at work.
August 20th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
This museum also reminds me of the museum of natural history in new york city. I went there 2 years ago and saw alot of interesting things there!
September 7th, 2007 at 9:01 pm
I have actually been there before. I didn’t get to see most of the museum. There was so much to see. I have to admit I looked at the beautiful, sparkling, shiny jewels most of the time. They were so pretty.
That’s a really cool museum anyways.

Mating is it innate or learned?
I was reading and I found this really cool article
http://www.biologynews.net/archives/2007/09/12/study_shows_wild_male_chimpanzees_use_stolen_food_to_win_over_the_opposite_sex.html
Researchers studying wild chimps in West Africa have discovered that males pinch desirable fruits from local farms and orchards as a means of attracting female mates. What Mrs. Baker was saying about how the male animal brings food to the female before they mate. It is a ritual. It shows that the male animal is a good provider.
The study, which took place in the West African village of Bossou in the Republic of Guinea, is the only recorded example of regular sharing of plant foods by unrelated, non-provisioned wild chimpanzees. However, in chimpanzee communities that engage in hunting, meat is frequently used as a ‘social tool’ for nurturing alliances and social bonds.
But my question is
Is this behavior innate or learned?
