What I’ve Done

I thought this video related to what we’ve been talking about in class, about what we are doing to the Earth, and how we can stop it so that our children will have a chance at the future. In this song, the band talks about erasing what they’ve done and starting again.

You can go to this website for the complete lyrics.

As I see all the things wrong in the world, I want to do something about it. Something needs to be done, but too many people think that this won’t affect them or just don’t care. The Earth is our home, our only home, and once we lose it we can never get it back. It is home to all the beauty and wonder of nature, but too much of that beauty is being destroyed too fast. Humans are causing some unbelievable and unnatural occurrences on the planet. We have to take action, and soon.

And if you just don’t care about the environment, what about the people? We learned in class about the starving population of the world. In the midst of all the chaos on the planet, thousands of people are dying daily of malnutrition and starvation. While the students at our school are safe and warm, children in Uganda are being abducted and forced to fight as soldiers in the army.

So it may seem like the world is falling apart, but is there hope? I think so. Think about this… Do we have time to erase what we’ve done? What can we do to prepare ourselves for the problems that lay ahead?

Wow! This video has truly inspired me to get off my butt and stop whining and to go out there and do something. There is time left to erase what we have done to our earth. Our generation has the vital responsibility to make a turning point. Every individual can do something to help. Also, it requires the help of the government. Republicans and democrats need to stop arguing and join together to pass environmental laws. The technology is there but the leadership is not. We all need to see the big picture. There are more wars to fight than terrorism and we need to address that. However, most of the nation is too concrete in thinking to think of anything but what is going on “right now.” Katrina was just prologue and more is yet to come. We have got to get people’s attention on this issue and EVERYONE needs to be doing their part to help.

  2. Steph Says:

Grant is right, it will take everyone on the planet to erase what we’ve done to our planet. We probably won’t be able to erase everything, but we can certianly erase a lot and stop or at least slow down global warming. It will be a real hard job, but there needs to be government support or else nobody will listen or even care probably. There need to be a lot of environmental laws that will pretty much force people to their part to save the planet. If nobody acts to save the earth, then Christ will have to come back to earth a little sooner than he might have planned, or else there won’t be any earth to come back to.

Thanks for making such a cool and interesting blog post. The video was really cool and also it kinda hit me how bad and disgusting some things are that people do to the world. The video did a good job of showing us things that we don’t hear about everyday. Grant also made a good point about the government. Its kinda pathetic that america bases their votes more on who can lower gas prices than over who will make a real difference that will matter in the future.
Great blog post, song, and video.

  4. Brantley Says:

I have heard this song so many times, but listening to it just now, it sounded so real. more people like linkin park, who have the public eye, should be informing prople on what we are doing to our home. I agree with Grant that this is something the government should be more involved in and do something about. I also agree that this is something that everyone needs to do their part in. Global warming is a huge problem that will affects everyone.

  5. Maryclaire Says:

This blog post was amazing amanda good job! That song really inspired me. I think its really cool how celebrities are getting involved with saving the planet like we are so hopefully that will influence alot more people to help save our home. Our generation needs to take charge and i also agree with grant, it takes EVERYONE not just some people to erase what we’ve done to our planet and start over.

  6. codie Says:

I think this song is a wonderful example of what amanda is trying to say. I love linkin park by the way! I think its frustrating that people today aren’t doing as much as they could to help save the environment. What exactly is it going to take to get this message through to them?

  7. Charlotte Says:

Amanda I think it is really cool how you related modern day music videos to biology and made it work. i liked how you put your blog in a positive way and made us fell like we can actually do something to chang the world we live in. We really need to take control of this problem and actually do things. It also really helps that celebrities are getting involved it really makes others want to join in and help as well. Thanks Amanda for posting a blog that is telling us that we can make a difference and not that the world is just going totaly down hill and all we can’t do anything about it.

  8. BRyant Says:

Your blog/song/video is inspiring. But hey, this is easy. In a few years, if we just give some…. some effort, we’ll all be fine. Hey, I’m gonna enjoy my life instead of sittin around feeling sorry, and recycle, bring in my three dollars for the compassion child thing, and donate to marathons on TBN and Daystar every now and then. Maybe become a polititian, and make some changes. Why don’t we be a bit more possitive. There’s nothing wrong with optimism, at least I hope not. We’ll all be fine.

  9. Andy Says:

I am a fan of Linkin Park an i like what they did in that video also. it shows the side of poverty we tend to ignore because we want to feel like everything in the world is ok.

  10. Anna Says:

I think that video is very true we have done strange and terrible things to the earth and it will soon come back to haunt us. We have to do something for this problem to be fixed we can’t just sit around and watch others try. I think one thing we can do is depend less on cars to transport us places. we could also carpool with people or take the bus. It would save us lots of money that is for sure. We could help clean up oil spills. They are pretty destructive. They polute the water, kill animals, and they polute the beach. This causes bad food, bad water, and dirty beaches. Animals will suffer and possibly some species will go extinct. I think if we can do those two things we can make a big effect on the world. There is so much more we can do too help as well.

  11. Emily R Says:

WOW! That video was terrifying…the worst part is that most of the events in the video weren’t predicitions about the future…They are events that have already happened. I don’t think it is possible to lower the average global temperature (please correct me if I’m wrong), but it is very easy to keep it from increasing.

A brilliant lady named Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” What about a group of 56 students? It is very easy to follow… but why not lead, and be followed?

  12. Emily R Says:

P.S. you should watch the music video for If Everyone Cared by Nickelback. That’s where I got the quote. It is amazing and very similar to What I’ve Done.

  13. Anna Says:

They realize that we all need to do something if we wan tto see the future. If they can realize that with the lives everyone envies then it would be pretty stupid to do nothing. They realize we have made the world a bad place they even said it in thier song.
    I’ll face myself
To cross out what I’ve become
    Erase myself
And let go of what I’ve done.
If we dont do something now our children might never see snow or giant pandas or bengal tigers. I know everyone lives snow imagine a life without many of the things we have. China is almost out of water, they won’t have any life when the water is gone. What if we end up like china and are crammed into caves sleeping on the ground, hungry, with no airconditioning and no shower. All of that could happen because of over population and lack of water unless we act soon. our two main water sources are down tens of feet isn t that enough to start acting NOW.

  14. Rachel P Says:

Cool post Amanda! awsome video too. I think that we can erase what we’ve, if we act now. As Grant said if the people in the government would stop argueing and get some enviornmental laws past we can get some where. However, it doesn’t depend all on them. They can do big stuff like produce more hybrid cars or use more solar power, but we can do small things that will have just as much impact. I think if people recycled more, rode bikes or walked instead of driving, and buying energy efficent light bulbs. That’s just a few things we can do, I’m sure there’s plenty more.

  15. Morgan Greenfield Says:

I think that video is setting an example to the youth of America because in today’s youthful world MTV reigns over all. So when teenagers see this video their eyes are “opened” and they would want to take action. I know when my friend saw this music video on MTV she actually joined a group that help plant trees in parks and neighborhoods, and water the plants almostr everyday that it doesn’t rain.

  16. Katie O. Says:

Wow, cool blog. Good point, Amanda, we do have time to wash away what we’ve done, but not much. It’s pretty sad that we have people who we hear about all the time telling us to do something and we completely ignore them. Sometimes when people see videos like that, they say, “I need to do something” but they do nothing. People (like myself at times) think that in order to change the world, they have to do something big. WRONG!!! It could be something as simple as eating meat once a day, instead of twice. Not that there is anything wrong with planting trees, we really need to, but we can do little things like the examples Miss Baker showed us at the end of An Inconvenient Truth. Even if its something like that, we need to act now. We may have time to erase what we’ve done, but we don’t have forever.

  17. Caroline Says:

Amanda this was a great blog post and was definately a way to get someone’s attention, it definately got mine. I never thought about what the song meant until now. I think that if we do start changing how we act and don’t always put ourselves as number one, we can start erasing what weve done. Not everything can be erased, but a lot of it can. I think that it will take a lot of work, but if everyone understands what is happening and is willing to chip in and help, it can be done.

  18. rachel s Says:

this was a great idea for a blog amanda! i actually downloaded this song on itunes after i read it. i think there are ways to erse what weve done to the world, and make it better for future generations.. we just have to actually do something about it instead of just talking about doing something.

  19. Evelyn Says:

Oh. my. gosh. That video was the worst, most straightforward, truthful video I’ve seen yet. I do think we have hope (with God there is always hope). But I don’t think we have much hope unless everyone starts to do everything they can, and fast. I don’t think we have very much time to erase what we’ve done, but we do have a little time. I think it’s only fair that we erase some of it so that future generations won’t inherit our problems as we inherited past problems. First and foremost, we have to get the word out. Get it out in a huge way so everyone will hear it and know about it. We ourselves have to do everything we can to fix the problem, and influence other people we know to do the same. I think we should have a Day of Service for the world this year. We can write letters to the President and Congress telling them we need their help to get things done. We can tell voters not to vote for people without a strong environmental campaign. It’s time to stop waiting and start acting NOW!!!!!!!! Nice post, Amanda. It really opened my eyes.

  20. Grant W. Says:

As always, I can not view the video. However, I did read the lyrics. I really liked the connection that you were able to make with this and the global warming crisis. The only downside that I felt to the song, and I could be wrong since I haven’t seen the attitude of the musicians in the video, was that it seemed a bit pessimistic. I really look at this opportunity to change the world as a great chance to make the world a better place for the next generations. I did really like the way you connected the song to global warming though.
(I’ll try to look at the video at school tomorrow.)

  21. Taylor Says:

I really like this song but I had never seen the video until a few weeks ago. It’s a sord of disturbing video. But I guess in the end of the video it inspires you to do something instead of waiting for other people to do something about it.

  22. jake Says:

I remember seeing that video when it first came out. I thought it was interesting, but now that we’ve been discussing climate change and how we affect the earth, watching it again really hit me. I really like the opening shot of the grass growing in reverse, it made me realize that we as a planet have made some bad decisions, and now I really want to make the world better!
    Thanks Amanda!

  23. Jordan Says:

WOW! that song was really inspiring, good job Amanda. Like Amanda said…many people dont think this effects them, even though they cant see it all…it is changing everything in the world like the air, people, and animals.

  24. Jordan Says:

wow, that song was really inspiring. It made me realize that even though we cant see all the changes they are occuring and they are hurting us even though we dont feel a rapid change.

  25. Jennifer M Says:

Amanda, this video was awesome!!!! Iloved it, it was a really good song and the video was inspiring and scary at the same time!! I love how they wrote a song about the earth and how we are ruining it and all the bad things that we’ve done to the world. It makese you want to go run for president or do something big! It really was an eye-opener!!! Thanks Amanda!!! :)

  26. Meredithh Says:

Woah! That video was really cool. It really inspired me to actually do something to help the world. I think its cool when celeberties step in to help. I really like the song & the video! Good job amanda :)

  27. sarah Says:

I love that song. The video is even better. It reminds me of how bad the world is, but then it gives me hope, because when the little grass seeds grow back it makes me think we can still take care of the planet until God takes it back.

  28. ali Says:

I really liked this blog post because it really related science and biology and helping the environment to things in our own environment. Seeing that video just showed a whole new side of outlook on things, it’s great that such big celebrities are getting involved because what alot of people don’t realize is that people WILL listen and you WILL make a huge difference. thankyou amanda!
