Endless Forms Most Beautiful - The Giant Panda
How much longer can the Giant Panda survive?

by Mary Claire
I was researching endangered species and I came upon the Giant Panda. Under the top 10 endangered species according to the World Wildlife Federation, the Giant Panda is ranked at number 2. Native to China, the main reason for their extinction is due to the loss of their natural environment and poaching. The Pandas are hunted mainly for their magnificent fur. An estimated remaining population of the Giant Panda is only 872 to 1352.
I was thinking…even though these pandas live across the world from us, what could be some ways to help save other species around the areas that we live in?

Check out this site that’s helping conserve the giant panda population
Also, here are some facts about the giant panda

Man, I think we should bring pandas over here, and raise some in a safer enviorment, and then let them go free. Ya know the climate of Georgia aint that much diffrent then China, and bamboo grows good in the Atlanta area. I’ve always wanted to own a Panda, though it’s not practical, nor realistic, but think about the benefits. Thats a darn good way to help. But, honestly, tell me having like 20 acres, and a nice enviorment, and having a panda to take care of and hang out with is a bad idea. Think about it. It might let the ladies see a soft side in you too. That’s usually helpfull when un-occupied, if you know what I mean. Tell me that aint kinda cool.

Also, I think we should learn from this panda. Look at the way it eats in the video. It’s not in a hurry, by any means. It’s happy. NOW YOU TELL ME, HOW YOU CAN BE THE SECOND MOST ENDANGERED SPECIES IN THE WORLD, AND STAY HAPPY AS GO LUCKY GETS!(I know, it’s more of a old country term, happy-go-lucky) Let’s enjoy life, and be concerned. It’s not the end. I think being happy is being healthy. If you can be in that bad a condition, and stay cool, you are worthy of all the extreme recognition.

It’s terrible that the Giant Panda is #2 on the endangered list. I know asia has very little trees, this probably doesnt help the pandas. People could go to China and plant more trees and bamboo. They could take some of the pandas into captivity and care for them. China could find places to put the pandas and make it protected land, this way the trees would not be cut down in this area.

This was a really interesting article. It really is sad that the Giant Pandas are that far up on the endagered list. Actually it’s sad that we have a list of endangered species list. We need to take care of our enviornment and the things that live in it. I actually agree with Bryant. Even though it seems like such a big step, if we get enough people/schools/etcl. to participate, who knows, maybe we can help something.

Pandas are adorable! And bamboo definitely grows well in Georgia. The Chattahoochee River runs through my neighborhood, and we have bamboo forests growing next to pine trees. I have some bamboo in my room that has been alive for over two years now… and it’s in a vase! Bamboo is definitely easy to grow. I think the main reason for panda’s endangered state is a lack of space to grow bamboo, and as the article said, the fact that they are separated from each other. It is like that video about the moss and other species growing on a rock. When they live in one large space, that is much better than living in small groups.

Wow it was really cool to hear about these Pandas. It is terrible that they are endangered but i see that some people are trying to do alot for them. I thought the facts about them were really interesting. Especially when it said the newborns are like the size of a stick of butter. Wow I sure hope we can help these cute animals because they seem like they dont do any harm. It seems like they dont deserve to be endangered.

That’s terrible!!! There needs to be a harty that would perserve bamboo trees in China because nobody wants to see pandas die out! Or China could trade with other countries that a big supply of bamboo or trees in particular because in Ms. Wood’s class Ms. Wood was telling us that China had low supply of natural resources.

As Anna said, I hate how the Gaint Panda is #2 on the endangered species list! I love pandas and I would hate to see them become extinct. I wonder if poaching is illegal in China. It didn’t say on the website, but it would make sense if it was. I think we could, as well as in China, plant more trees to save the habbitats of extinct animals. I do like Anna’s idea of putting the pandas in protected land, however I don’t think there’s very much forest left in China.

*Sigh* They are so cute. Yet, they’re number two on the endangered species list!!! How could any one kill a creature that’s so magnificent. Apparently they can. Well, this just goes to show how important it is to stop, or at least slow down, deforestation. At least their not extinct yet. On a more pleasant note, you can watch the panda at Zoo Atlanta at http://www.zooatlanta.org/animals_panda_cam.php4 during the day. Awesome blog Mary Claire!

Emily R, I got goosbumps while reading your comment!
I love how you made the connection from the habitat fragmentation video to endangered species like the giant panda. Bravo to you for making the connection!

It scares me that so many animals are endangered in our world or already extinct. If animals today are becoming extinct then what if animals that we depend on become extinct. How will we get food? Theres so many questions to this subject it overwhelms me!

The pandas are so cute. It is really sad to see that they are number two on the endangered species list. Like Emily said, there is so much bamboo growing around here. I think that we should send most of it over to China so that the pandas can live together and have enough to eat. Sometimes all it takes is a simple act from one of us to save a bunch of things. There are programs out there that if you donate so much, you can save a child or save a specific animal.

i can’t believe that there are only 872 pandas in the world! It seems like theres always an animal going endangered and nothing gets done about it. What to the hunters do with their fur?
October 8th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
It’s kinda scary to hear about animals becoming extinct or endangered, becasue what would happen if some of our major food sources went extinct? What would happen to us? I know it seems impossible right now, but how long would it be until we went extinct? People a long time ago probably thought that the giant panda would be around forever, but now they are on the endangered list.
October 8th, 2007 at 5:22 pm
One main way we could save endangered species around here is to STOP DEVELOPING LAND FOR HOUSES!!!!! I mean seriously, we don’t need any more stupid, expensive, really big houses for THREE PEOPLE TO LIVE IN!! Nobody needs that much room, but the animals do. We are already overpopulated enough, that’s just asking for it. I love giant pandas and it really upsets me that they’re endangered, but I’m glad action is being taken to protect them (come on, who would be cruel enough to steal fur from a cute little panda?). Pandas are lucky they can get water from their food source, but I actually thought they were bigger and heavier than the website said. Loved the post Mary Claire!

I’m really suprised there are so few left in the world. I didn’t realize how endangered the animals truly are. I think with a case like this, humans might have to start getting involved and getting some to mate more and stuff. Otherwise, I’m not sure what else to do since we can’t go back in time and fix whatever caused them to be endangered in the first place.
October 9th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
It is a bad thing that there are not many pandas left. I didn’t know they are number 2 on the endAngered list. That is terrible. I didn’t know that pandas eat from 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo each day. That is alot. I don’t think we can help them that much because they live on the other side of the world. We can’t just go over there. One thing we can do is try to get the people building houses where the pandas live to stop destroying their habitat. It is amazing that so many people are trying to save pandas by creating a panda conservation fund.

Every since i was little Pandas have been my favorite animal and I have heard before that they were going extinct. This time it is even harder to hear since they are becoming extinct due to shortage of food, because i always thought it was because hunters were killing them for their fur. i think it would be a great idea to bring them to America to repopulate them.
October 9th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
This artlicle really shocked me!! I knew that the Pandas were on the endangered species list but I had no idea that their population was down that low!!!!! It made me think about ways that I could try to help! Then when I clicked on the link that MC had I realized that I could help out by donating money to the zoo and they will take care of it from there!!!!!

O.K., Eveyln, people aren’t going to stopp building fancy houses. I myself want a nice home, with genrous room, and space for my family should they decide to stop by. And what are my parents going to live in when I start making money? NOthing under 1.5 mill, nothing less. When I start making 3 mill a week, I’m gonna need something to spend that money on. Especially if we do it through God. Our wants are just as important to him just as much as our needs. Like Ben said on some erilier, distant coment, the Lord God will not keep us in this Earth until conditions become unbearable. Tell me you don’t want the nice house, the nice car and what not. We should just be better stuarts over what we have. It’s not that there’s no space, we’re not using it appropriately. They are anyways, cus I’m not included, I’m strait.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
3 million a week is greed. You could argue that the majority of our current problems come from that kind of attitude. Why do you need 3 million a week? Do you really think a big house with lots of space and stuff makes you happy? Bryant, it sounds to me like you have a case of affluenza. Go to that weblink and get yourself checked out.
Really, on the more serious side I know what you can offer the world Bryant and it’s a lot more than one more big house and money spent on stuff.

Pandas are so cute and fluffy. If they were huggable, i would hug them. I really like them, but have you seen red pandas? In the zoo they have a few red pandas and they are cute as can be. They look like foxes except they are black and red. I think if I were to see a wild panda i would take as many pictures as possible, then run!!!

WOW, Holdup now, whow. Maybe I worded something off. I want sufficient space for any of my family members to drop, maybe enough room for my parents to have a better place to settle down, and never have to work another day in their lives. The NFL pays it’s workers, and it does it generously. What if the house was energy efficient, and enviormentally friedly. Perhaps the home could work with nature, as opposed to against it, like those homes built into the side of hills in England with naturall waterfalls. It aint just about me, it’s about paying back all the people that have helped me get to where I need to be. Back to God. If it’s his will I preach, or not, I’m always gonna tell people about how good he is, and how he provides. If I wanna preach prosperity to people, I can’t be hypocritical.
I do not want to start any type of argument, or any type of intense conversation, I’m just explaining what I said erlier. I know you didn’t mean to hit me like that, but, It jumped at me. O.K., perhaps I’m wrong, perhaps my Intentions are good, Ideas are wrong, something like that? I aint tryin to be greedy, but I’m gonna enjoy life. It’s rare you come accros somebody without that right (to enjoy life).
October 10th, 2007 at 10:51 pm
BACK-UP TO THE LAST ONE-DON’t COUNT AS CREDIT,PLEASE
I’m not telling the NFL, or anybody to pay me millions of dollars of useless money. I can put that money to good use. A nice home isn’t gonna stop me from helping people. That junk is useless if you’ve got no one to share it with. Money is paper until you come up with an intention for it’s use. It’s just as rippable as any other piece of paper. Next to that, the Bible says that the reason God gives us wealth is to use it for his intentions, which are the right ones, and aren’t targeted toward greedy desires. I really think I should just slow down when I say this stuff, I don’t think I got that out right.

Well its really good to see that you guys are concerened about endangered species in general. The lack of food for the panda’s is due to the fact that their habitat is being destroyed. But, keep in mind that there is also the problem of poaching .If we can raise awareness of how bad the paoching is, more people will be reluctant to wear fur. Also, poachers get ample amounts of money for the panda’s they kill, if less people buy fur, there won’t be as much of a market to sell it to, and there will be less of an incentive to kill the panda’s. I think that raising awareness of how bad the endangerement of the panda’s has become, more people will be willing to try and make a difference.
October 12th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Awww!! They are so cute even if they have a nasty attitude. That’s so sad that pandas are no ranked #2 on the endangered species list. I never knew that they actually eat meat. I thought they were strictly vegetarians. I guess I was wrong, but at least I know better now.
October 14th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
Thankyou maryclaire for writing this post, i was really really unaware how drastic this has become. I wish stuff like this was in the top news stories, but unfortunately its often pushed back and not mentioned. The panda is an amazing creature and to me a trademark of China. Without it China wouldn’t be the same too me. ( that sounds a little drastic but its just an association ) This was upsetting to read, but maybe we could take something like this and make a huge impact in the world.
October 14th, 2007 at 10:24 pm
It would be really sad if pandas died off, because they are sooooo cute! It it a great thing that people are doing somthing about their situation, but it is a big disadvantage that they do not breed well in captivity.
October 21st, 2007 at 10:06 am
that video was reaaly interesting. It is so bad that pandas are endangered. They are so beautiful. It was interesting how that panda ate. He just sat down and took his time eating. That is just he opposite of me. I site down and eat as fast as i can and then get up and go do something. pandas are so cool and i go want them to go extinct. I wish i could help them but what can i do. They live on the other side of the world. I just wish i could help them in some way.

Pandas a so cute and cuddly like a stuffed animal!!! In school we had to do an endangered animal report and so I chose a Giant Panda. Pandas eat bamboo for many hours and they live in china but in the zoos it is more safe because in china they are poachers who kill the pandas. I wish if pandas were not #2 on the endangered list and pandas are not harmful so I hope they will not become extinct and they are so loving and caring and happy animals even though penguins, dolphins, and elephants are my favorite animals, pandas has become one of my favorite animals too but I love all animals and I hope they all can be safe!!!!!
